While it is out-classed by the next two tiers, it is important at the start of a track to gain an early lead before any Turbo Pads have shown up. It's acquired by chaining three Perfect Power Slide Turbos in a single power slide, using a normal Turbo Power-Up, or big Hang-Time Turbos. Orange Turbo is shown with orange fire, and gives a good speed increase. While it does make you faster, it's not much better than your base speed. Red Turbo is aquired from single Power Slide Turbos, as well as small Hang-Time Turbos. Red Turbo is indicated by red exhaust fire, and provides a minimal speed increase. It's not fast, and any expert player will never have this while racing. As a rule of thumb, you DO NOT want to be in this state. You're going at base speed and run the risk of being overtaken if anyone is nearby. White Smoke from the exhaust means you have no Turbo. You'll want to try and use all methods of gaining a Turbo as often as possible, as Turbos will give you Reserve time (explained further below). They have other names throughout the fandom, such as Blue Fire. There are four different tiers to your Turbo: Red, Orange, Yellow and Blue, named after the colour of the fire coming out of your kart's exhaust, each faster than the last.

You should instead hop into the ramp to start a Power Slide and go around the turn that way. It's up to you to figure out when to mix these up and when not to.Īnother important Power Sliding tip is that, if a corner has a jump right before it, you shouldn't take the jump. Sometimes you might want two Perfect Turbos before quickly switching direction. Perfect Power Slide Turbos make your turning circle wider than Good and Okay ones, and they take longer to get to. While most of the time you'll want every Power Slide to have three Perfect Turbos in it, sometimes you won't want that. Roo's Tubes is a great place to practice this technique. Instead, hold the Hop button all the way through the jump and, so long as you steer with the left stick just before you hit the ground, you'll immediately enter a new Power Slide in that direction. When you land from a jump, you shouldn't wait for your kart to land and then Hop to start a new Power Slide. This makes it possible to turn one way and then Power Slide the other way, great for improving your racing line, avoiding obstacles, or laying up a Power Slide from an awkward part of the track.

In order to maintain high speeds, you need to be Power Sliding at all times, even on straights, because Power Slide Turbos will give you a tiny jolt of extra speed and will build up your Turbo Reserves (explained further below).

This section details the finer points regarding Power Slides and Power Slide Turbos, so that you can take full advantage of them. This makes it incredibly easy to swing in to kiss the apex of a corner at high speed.
What makes CTR unique here is that Power Slides let you to adjust the curve of your turn with the left stick or D-Pad, making it either wider or tighter. When making your way through a corner, you'll want to come as close to the apex as possible. At expert levels of play, minimizing the distance your kart travels down the track can make the difference, even when going down straights. While CTR may not look like Gran Turismo or Forza Motorsport, there's one area that is crucial to getting around a turn, and that's your racing line.
